The start of creche syndrome…

2009 February 23

My poor little nunu baby girl. Had to take her to the hospital yesterday – BUT only because I didn’t wan to phone our home GP and get charged for a call-out and consultation and Sunday fees and for interrupting their brunch etc. This way I only owe the hospital, and since it’s practically a government one, they still won’t charge me an arm and a leg.

On Thursday Amelia was hot to the touch – this could have been from the awfully hot weather we’ve been having, or even the car seat since we quickly popped into Spar after work. After a lukewarm to cold bath, her temp came down a bit. I gave her some Panado syrup, and after her feed her temp was back to normal.  She had a bit of a snot nose, but nothing that Iliadin couldn’t dry up.

On Friday her nose was so blocked, I swear her hands and feet were blue from lack of oxygen, and she was warm again. Got some menthol drops for her bedding and some Vicks rub and Zinplex Jnr. I diluted the Vicks rub with a lot of petroleum jelly, but think she is a bit sensitive to the menthol – she got a rash where I rubbed her in. At least her nose opened and she could breathe ok.

Saturday night she woke up crying 5 times – every hour from 11pm. Henk and I thought that maybe she’s got an ear infection, that’s why she cries when she lies down.
She fed sitting upright. She didn’t finish her cereal – every time she swallowed, she cried. Off we went to the hospital.
We were first in line, but still had to wait 2 hours for the only doctor on duty, because he was in surgery. (They called me out later to do some blood work on that same patient that he operated on)

Dr looked her over, prodded and checked. Turn out she has a chest infection. He gave us some antibiotics and told me to continue with Panado for pain.

By 9pm last night she was almost her old self again – all smiles and giggles. She slept through and this morning she was cooing and gurgling at her toys.

So starts the crèche syndrome. Told Henk that we can expect to be ill every month for the next year or so. Needless to say, Henk and I both contracted whatever bug she has.

Boy! I know what you guys are going through. Caitlyn has been ill every month since she started daycare at 5 months old in January. Break’s my heart to see her like that. She now has a chest and ear infection, and doc has advised that we take her out of daycare so that she can have a fair chance at building her immune system. So – after much panic and worry and tears and nearly resigning – we have found a nanny that will stay with us and care for her in a safe invironment. Hopefully that will be a bit better, we’ll see.
